How to Track Your Lost or Stolen Android Phone inside Nepal?

How to Track Your Lost or Stolen Android Phone inside Nepal?
STEP 1:
First and foremost thing after buying a smartphone is to write down the IMEI number of your phone. Every smartphone has a unique IMEI number (International Mobile Equipment Identity Number). A dual SIM phone will have 2 IMEI number. It will also be printed on the back of your device’s packaging. If you are unable to find the number, you have to launch your phone app and dial the number *#06# . This will give you the IMEI number of your phone. Store this number in a safe place so that it helps you in locating your phone when it is lost. Another way of finding an IMEI number is by logging into google dashboard account.
If your phone gets lost, you can file a Police complaint by visiting the Regional Police Unit Office (Hanuman Dhoka, Teku for Kathmandu Valley users). You have to provide IMEI number of your phone while filing a police complaint and then your service provider (NTC/NCell) uses this IMEI number to track your phone. Also, make sure that you block the SIM card that was being used in the handset. This will force the thief to replace the SIM, which will help us find his/her identity.
How IMEI tracking works?
Your Network provider will blacklist the IMEI number(s) which you provided while filing a complaint and when the thief inserts a new SIM on that phone, the BTS (Tower) will receive the details of the new SIM inserted. From that details of the new SIM, you will know the thief’s name and all the details.
STEP 2:
Download Google’s Android Device Manager (Link ). If you lose your phone, you can just visit www.google.com/android/devicemanager website and locate it with your Google account. Using this, you can find it on a map, ring it, lock it, or remotely erase it. This service will be the best option for most Android users.
STEP 3:
Turn on Photos sync on Google photos or use DropBox. Syncing your camera photos can be a good idea. A clever idea indeed, if it works. The suspected thief can use your camera and click some selfies or photos and you can view their photos from your google plus account.
STEP 4:
Inform your friends and family of the theft. It’s possible that the thief may try to impersonate you through social media or via SMS.

CLOUD computing concept

CLOUD COMPUTING comes into focus only when you think about what IT always needs: a way to increase capacity or add capabilities on the fly without investing in new infrastructure, training new personnel, or licensing new software. Cloud computing encompasses any subscription-based or pay-per-use service that, in real time over the Internet, extends IT's existing capabilities.

Cloud computing is at an early stage, with a motley crew of providers large and small delivering a slew of cloud-based services, from full-blown applications to storage services to spam filtering. Yes, utility-style infrastructure providers are part of the mix, but so are SaaS (software as a service) providers such as Salesforce.com. Today, for the most part, IT must plug into cloud-based services individually, but cloud computing aggregators and integrators are already emerging.

InfoWorld talked to dozens of vendors, analysts, and IT customers to tease out the various components of cloud computing. Based on those discussions, here's a rough breakdown of what cloud computing is all about:

 1. SaaS
This type of cloud computing delivers a single application through the browser to thousands of customers using a multitenant architecture. On the customer side, it means no upfront investment in servers or software licensing; on the provider side, with just one app to maintain, costs are low compared to conventional hosting. Salesforce.com is by far the best-known example among enterprise applications, but SaaS is also common for HR apps and has even worked its way up the food chain to ERP, with players such as Workday. And who could have predicted the sudden rise of SaaS "desktop" applications, such as Google Apps and Zoho Office?

2. Utility computing
The idea is not new, but this form of cloud computing is getting new life from Amazon.com, Sun, IBM, and others who now offer storage and virtual servers that IT can access on demand. Early enterprise adopters mainly use utility computing for supplemental, non-mission-critical needs, but one day, they may replace parts of the datacenter. Other providers offer solutions that help IT create virtual datacenters from commodity servers, such as 3Tera's AppLogic and Cohesive Flexible Technologies' Elastic Server on Demand. Liquid Computing's LiquidQ offers similar capabilities, enabling IT to stitch together memory, I/O, storage, and computational capacity as a virtualized resource pool available over the network.

3. Web services in the cloud

Closely related to SaaS, Web service providers offer APIs that enable developers to exploit functionality over the Internet, rather than delivering full-blown applications. They range from providers offering discrete business services -- such as Strike Iron and Xignite -- to the full range of APIs offered by Google Maps, ADP payroll processing, the U.S. Postal Service, Bloomberg, and even conventional credit card processing services

4. Platform as a service
Another SaaS variation, this form of cloud computing delivers development environments as a service. You build your own applications that run on the provider's infrastructure and are delivered to your users via the Internet from the provider's servers. Like Legos, these services are constrained by the vendor's design and capabilities, so you don't get complete freedom, but you do get predictability and pre-integration. Prime examples include Salesforce.com's Force.com, Coghead and the new Google App Engine. For extremely lightweight development, cloud-based mashup platforms abound, such as Yahoo Pipes or Dapper.net.

5. MSP (managed service providers)
One of the oldest forms of cloud computing, a managed service is basically an application exposed to IT rather than to end-users, such as a virus scanning service for e-mail or an application monitoring service (which Mercury, among others, provides). Managed security services delivered by SecureWorks, IBM, and Verizon fall into this category, as do such cloud-based anti-spam services as Postini, recently acquired by Google. Other offerings include desktop management services, such as those offered by CenterBeam or Everdream.

Here are some benefits that you could get by investing on the right kind of cloud computing solutions.

  • ACCESSIBILITY
The thing about cloud computing solutions is that it is literally run over a series of networks, meant to link various devices with each other. These devices – be they laptops or phones or desktops – are connected via internet.
This entails a hassle-free kind of network support as multiple deals could be dealt with simultaneously from the comfort of any place you desire. The caveat of a necessary internet connection withstanding, this promotes the accessibility that cloud computing solutions could offer to your company.

  •  EFFICIENCY
Not only is cloud computing solutions cost-effective (given the fact that this is a specialized, systematic service that can be manned and managed by minimal expert staff on payroll) but also efficient in terms of time management and availability.

Cloud computing solutions, once established, can mean that you can get much more work done faster and with less people required. When too many people are working on the one thing, it can get quite sloppy and misguided. When fairly distributed and categorized, compartmentalizing the labour through these solutions will merit immediate efficiency with fast results.
There will be minimal need for new software, what with the connection of programs through the cloud; these solutions could be tailor-fit to the needs and betterment of your company.

  • FLEXIBILITY
Should any of your current plans fail – or there should there be a new direction that your company needs to take – cloud computing will make the transition that much easier, with the flexibility that this service can provide. The resources that are provided will be maximized and can be fully tailored with whichever direction you should wish to take.
Your company’s inner infrastructure will not falter nor fail for the cloud computing solutions services offer a firm foundation to which you can twist and turn to your leisure. Perhaps you meet a method that beckons a different strategy in order to reach a particular goal – cloud computing will make integration of devices and network services that much easier with its synchronization and maximization of resources. No hassle, no fuss – and it all comes at lightning quick accessibility.
Investing in these innovative cloud technology services are aimed and dedicated to benefit you in the long run. It’s simple, really – or CMS IT can make IT simple.

way to register free domain name and hosting lifetime fully works

Before discussing free domain name registration options let’s first define the meaning of the domain name and what that domain names are all about. According to a short definition and not going into very technical details the domain name is a “string of letters and numbers that is used to name organizations, computers and addresses on the internet“, so basically, the domain name is the easy to remember name of web address or website.

Fast development and deep penetration of Internet into all aspects of our life motivates businesses and even many individuals to go online i.e. to create their business or personal websites that all should have their own domain name to make their sites easier to locate the web.

We should also note that nowadays domain name is not only a name of the website but it more and more often becomes a well known brand (e.g. Google.com, Yahoo.com), a trade name, or identity of a well known Internet resource (e.g. PRchecker.info, the domain name of this site).

So that it becomes quite important to choose a proper domain name that is short, easy to remember and represents the website very well. No doubt large companies can afford to buy even very expensive short names from the current owners, however, that’s not the case for personal or even small business sites owners who do not want to invest too much making their first steps on the Web.

Although that is not so expensive to purchase a domain name with such most popular extensions like .com, .net, .org, .biz, .info, etc. there are still cases when the site owner does not want or cannot afford to buy a domain name even at quite low price, and in this case there is such option as free domain name that we discuss in this article.

Please note that there are a lot of free domain name scams on the web that trick Internet users offering free domains and making them fill in dozens of web forms, sing up for tons of “free offers”, etc. however, finally they never give away a promised free domain. Be aware. You’ve been warned.

In this article we propose to consider the following option to register a free domain name, whose that are not scams and can be used safely:

    A completely free domain registration
A free domain name included with purchase of some service

This post is mainly focus to the people who want free domain name with free hosting plan.after many search and research on the internet finally i got two important sites which can provide you a free domain name with free hosting plan for ur website which is buld by you as dreamweaver site and many other.

Facts and information about different wireless telephone technology

Facts and information about different wireless telephone technology
Mobile phones: 1G 2G 3G 4G

1G-
1G is short for first-generation wireless telephone technology. This generation of phones and networks is represented by the brick-sized analog phones introduced in    the 1980’s. Subsequent numbers refer to newer and upcoming technology.

2G-
2G phones use digital networks. Going all-digital allowed for the introduction of digital data services, such as SMS and email. 2G networks and their digital nature    also made it more difficult to eavesdrop on mobile phone calls.

3G-
3G networks are an in between standard. 3G is seen more as pre4G instead of a standard of its own. The advantage 3G networks have over 2G networks is speed. 3G    networks are built to handle the needs of today’s wireless users. This standard of wireless networks increases the speed of internet browsing, picture and video    messaging, and handheld GPS use.

4G-
4G (AKA Beyond 3G) is like the other generations in that its advantage lies in promised increased speeds in data transmission. There is currently no formal    definition for 4G, but there are objectives. One of these objectives is for 4G to become a fully IP-based system, much like modern computer networks. The supposed     speeds for 4G will be between 100 Mbit/s and 1 Gbit/s.

++How much faster is 4G compared to 3G and what applications run better on 4G?

3G and 4G are standards for mobile communication. Standards specify how the airwaves must be used for transmitting information (voice and data). 3G (or 3rd Generation)

was launched in Japan in 2001. As recently as mid-2010, the networks for most wireless carriers in the U.S. were 3G. 3G networks were a significant improvement over  2G networks, offering higher speeds for data transfer. The improvement that 4G offers over 3G is often less pronounced. Analysts use the analogy of standard vs Hi-Def  TV to describe the difference between 3G and 4G.

How to make your own website full tutorial

Ethicalguy gopal

Free Website Creation Tutorial For Beginners

Gold Line
Welcome!
You have arrived at a free, beginner-friendly tutorial site that will teach you to create your very own website and you'll be happy to know there is no web design experience needed.
Step One
Register a Domain Name (YourSite.com)
Your website needs an address and that's exactly what a domain name is. Choose wisely because this name will represent your brand. You want to select something that fits and is memorable.
Check out these domain registration tips and discover how to get a free guide to help you start your website. Also learn how to get a domain name for only $1.99.
Step Two
Choose a Web Host
The web host is the company that houses your site and provides you with email addresses, space for your web pages, free scripts for blogging, forums, social networking, shopping carts and more.
There are two kinds of hosting options I recommend. The cheaper, do-it-yourself option is best for those who want to learn mostly on their own.
However, if you want to make money with your site, you may decide to go with Site Build It! because this system holds your hand through the brainstorming and building process.
Step Three
Start Building!
How you create your site will depend on the kind you want to make. For example, if you want to create a blog, you can take advantage of the built-in templates that come with the blogging (WordPress) platform.
No coding experience is necessary. All you do is search for the theme you want to use, activate it, make your customizations and your website is ready to go.
If you don't want to use WordPress, you can build using a more manual method or web design software.

What Kind of Site Do You Want?

There are so many different types of websites. From ecommerce, membership to content sites/blogs. Find out the best way to approach your future site. Click here for details on different kinds of websites you can create.

Creating Niche Websites

  • Creating Niche WebsitesA niche website focuses on a narrow market. So instead of making a website about something generic like skin care, you may choose to narrow it down to getting rid of acne, or managing eczema.
The more defined your target market is, the easier it will be to engage your audience and sell products to them.
You start by doing some keyword research so you can find a "profitable niche" and build a very useful content-rich website that caters to the audience you've defined.
Once your site is up and running you can monetize it by selling ad space, your own products, joining affiliate programs, and more.
This is the way I've been earning a living since 2006. Learn more about building niche websites here.

Site Build It! (SBI!)

Site Build It!SBI! is a premium website building system for static websites that launched in 2000.
SiteSell prides themselves on the step by step guidance they provide instead of just doling out unlimited gigabytes of web page space and a "good luck!"
Their system comes with a domain name, hosting, autoresponder, brainstorming tools (niche finder), mailing list manager, forum support, site builder, marketing tips and more.
You will receive a video action guide that will walk you through the brainstorming and website building process. The system is broken down into 10 days and you can follow along at your own pace.
SBI! is not really for blogs, but it is for people who want to make simpler, informational websites to make money with Google AdSense, affiliate programs and more.

Static HTML vs. Dynamic Websites

There are basically two kinds of websites you can create.
1) Static HTML (Content is uploaded and displayed "as is")
2) Dynamic (WordPress, Joomla, etc.) Dynamic means information is pulled from a database so you can display your website content by date, category, etc. Think blogs.
Static HTML sites are not that popular these days. In order to create them, you have to learn HTML, use templates or buy some kind of software like Dreamweaver, Artisteer, etc.
This is actually a static website that you're reading now. It was created long before blogging became popular.
With Site Build It! (above), you will be building a static website, but you don't need any software or learn website design since their system comes with a website builder.
In 2004, WordPress revolutionized the way we build websites because there is no software to buy. You simply install the WordPress script from your web host, launch the admin panel, choose a theme design and begin writing your content.
Because WordPress is dynamic, you can add functionality very easily using plugins. These are scripts (many of them are free) that you install to help you do so many things (collect visitor feedback, build surveys, add social media icons, and more.)
No longer do you have to spend time uploading complicated scripts just to add shopping carts, comments, and all other kinds of functionality to your website.
Learn more about WordPress below.

Using WordPress to Make Blogs or Dynamic Sites

WordPress LogoIf you want to create a blog website (content sorted dynamically by category and date), I would highly recommend using WordPress because it's the most flexible, robust blogging system on the Web.
What's cool about this platform is you will have access to a variety of templates you can choose from, so building your website is a breeze.
And when you're ready to change designs, just choose another theme and your site will update instantly!
As you'll see in the video on my WordPress tutorial page, WordPress is not just for blogs where your content is dated and arranged in reverse chronological order. You can use it to create a traditional, static site as well.
Here's a quick overview of how to get started with WordPress.

The Free Website Warning

You will never see me endorsing free web hosting. Not only does the web address look unprofessional (freesite.yoursite.com), but you will be very limited to what you can do with your site.
Free sites are also very risky because you don't own your content. So if the company decides to shut down, guess what happens to your content?
Yep. Right down the drain.
Many people make the mistake of starting off free with the intention of moving to a paid host later. The problem is, the process of moving to another host can be a royal pain, so you might as well do it right the first time.
Also, check out my article that discusses more common mistakes people make with building websites today.

Want to Build a Social Networking Site?

Cloud computing concept

Ethicalguy gopal

Cloud computing is the concept of using someone else's computer equipment instead of your own. It allows a person or a business to forget about technical details like whether a hard drive is big enough and puts that concern on another party. Sometimes those third parties charge for the use of the equipment or computer programs, which they are making available for you to use. Other times, the service is available as a public service; for example, Apple Inc. does not charge for the use of the iCloud for basic services. The iCloud saves your music and documents and other files and it does not use any space on your personal computer or mobile device. Those hard drives that store your information in the iCloud are maintained entirely by the Apple Corporation, and they have a guarantee of reasonable use with minimal interruption of service. One advantage of using the Apple iCloud is that because it is not your hard drive, and because all of your Apple devices are linked to the same cloud device, you as an end-user are able to access your files from all devices at any time. This advantage is a benefit of using someone else's hard drive across a computer network, which is the purpose of the cloud, and not the primary definition of what a cloud is or does. (Some people think that the Cloud's purpose is to allow a common access to data across multiple devices; this is actually a secondary advantage.) Another example of a cloud based system that is available for no charge is the free version of Ubuntu One, which allows up to 5 GB of storage space to any user. Ubuntu One is targeted to a Linux user as opposed to a Macintosh or PC user. For more technical and more accurate information, please continue reading the remainder of the article below.
Cloud computing is the use of computing resources (hardware and software) that are delivered as a service over a common use of a cloud-shaped symbol as an abstraction for the complex infrastructure it contains in system diagrams. Cloud computing entrusts remote services with a user's data, software and computation.
End users access cloud-based applications through a web browser or a light-weight desktop or mobile app while the business software and user's data are stored on servers at a remote location. Proponents claim that cloud computing allows companies to avoid upfront infrastructure costs, and focus on projects that differentiate their businesses instead of infrastructure.[1] Proponents also claim that cloud computing allows enterprises to get their applications up and running faster, with improved manageability and less maintenance, and enables IT to more rapidly adjust resources to meet fluctuating and unpredictable business demand.[1][2][3]
In the business model using software as a service, users are provided access to application software and databases. Cloud providers manage the infrastructure and platforms that run the applications. SaaS is sometimes referred to as "on-demand software" and is usually priced on a pay-per-use basis. SaaS providers generally price applications using a subscription fee.
Proponents claim that the SaaS allows a business the potential to reduce IT operational costs by outsourcing hardware and software maintenance and support to the cloud provider. This enables the business to reallocate IT operations costs away from hardware/software spending and personnel expenses, towards meeting other IT goals. In addition, with applications hosted centrally, updates can be released without the need for users to install new software. One drawback of SaaS is that the users' data are stored on the cloud provider's server. As a result, there could be unauthorized access to the data.

How to recognize phishing email messages, links, or phone calls

Ethicalguy gopal

Phishing email messages, websites, and phone calls are designed to steal money. Cybercriminals can do this by installingmalicious software on your computer or stealing personal information off of your computer.

Cybercriminals also use social engineering to convince you to install malicious software or hand over your personal information under false pretenses. They might email you, call you on the phone, or convince you to download something off of a website.

What does a phishing email message look like?

Here is an example of what a phishing scam in an email message might look like.
What is phishing
  • Spelling and bad grammar. Cybercriminals are not known for their grammar and spelling. Professional companies or organizations usually have a staff of copy editors that will not allow a mass email like this to go out to its users. If you notice mistakes in an email, it might be a scam. For more information, see Email and web scams: How to help protect yourself.
  • Beware of links in email. If you see a link in a suspicious email message, don't click on it. Rest your mouse (but don't click) on the link to see if the address matches the link that was typed in the message. In the example below the link reveals the real web address, as shown in the box with the yellow background. The string of cryptic numbers looks nothing like the company's web address.
    Phishing scams masked web address
Links might also lead you to .exe files. These kinds of file are known to spread malicious software.
  • Threats. Have you ever received a threat that your Hotmail account would be closed if you didn't respond to an email message? The email message shown above is an example of the same trick. Cybercriminals often use threats that your security has been compromised.
  • Spoofing popular websites or companies. Scam artists use graphics in email that appear to be connected to legitimate websites but actually take you to phony scam sites or legitimate-looking pop-up windows. For more information, seeAvoid scams that use the Microsoft name fraudulently.
Cybercriminals also use web addresses that resemble the names of well-known companies but are slightly altered.

Beware of phishing phone calls

Cybercriminals might call you on the phone and offer to help solve your computer problems or sell you a software license. Neither Microsoft nor our partners make unsolicited phone calls (also known as cold calls) to charge you for computer security or software fixes.
Once they've gained your trust, cybercriminals might ask for your user name and password or ask you to go to a website to install software that will let them access your computer to fix it. Once you do this, your computer and your personal information is vulnerable.
Treat all unsolicited phone calls with skepticism. Do not provide any personal information.
For more information, see Avoid tech support phone scams.

Report phishing scams

If you receive a fake phone call, take down the caller's information and report it to your local authorities.
You can use Microsoft tools to report a suspected scam on the web or in email.
  • Internet Explorer. While you are on a suspicious site, click the gear icon and then point to Safety. Then click Report Unsafe Website and use the web page that is displayed to report the website.
  • Hotmail. If you receive a suspicious email message that asks for personal information, click the check box next to the message in your Hotmail inbox. Click Mark as and then point to Phishing scam.
  • Microsoft Office Outlook. Attach the suspicious email message to a new email message and forward it toreportphishing@antiphishing.org. To learn how to attach an email message to an email message, see Attach a file or other item to an email message.

Windows 8 Outperforming Ubuntu Linux With Intel OpenGL Graphics

  • In our benchmarks of Microsoft Windows 8, we have found that Intel's Windows OpenGL driver is generally superior to that of their open-source Linux graphics driver. Some progress has been made, but in today's testing of an ASUS Ultrabook bearing an Ivy Bridge processor, Linux has a ways to go for some games in matching the Windows binary performance and features.
  • Over the years there have been many Windows 7 vs. Linux benchmarks on Phoronix. Having recently picked up an ASUS Ultrabook for benchmarking, some Windows 8 vs. Ubuntu 13.04 development benchmarks were carried out to see the positioning today. An ASUS S56CA-WH31 was the candidate for this testing, which is a $500 Intel Ultrabook sporting an Intel Core i3 3217U CPU, 4GB of DDR3 system memory, 500GB 5400RPM HDD + 24GB Solid-State Drive, and a 15.6-inch display with 1366 x 768 resolution. The ASUS Ultrabook comes pre-loaded with Microsoft Windows 8.
  • The Intel Core i3 3217U processor provides HD 4000 graphics, two physical cores plus Hyper Threading, 1.8GHz clock frequency, 3MB cache, and is rated at a 17 Watt TDP. All benchmarking in this article between Windows and Linux happened from this ASUS S56CA-WH31 Ultrabook. The stock Intel Windows 8 graphics performance was compared to Ubuntu 13.04 in a variety of cross-platform games using OpenGL where the games are known to have quality/similar ports to Windows and Linux. Benchmarking on both operating systems were all handled via the open-source Phoronix Test Suite software in conjunction with OpenBenchmarking.org.
  • The Ubuntu 13.04 development snapshot used was from mid-March and packaged the Linux 3.8 kernel, Unity 6.6.0, xf86-video-intel 2.21.4, X.Org Server 1.13.2, GCC 4.7.2, and Mesa 9.0.2. For also seeing the very latest state of the Intel OpenGL driver software on Linux, Ubuntu 13.04 was additionally tested when using a Git development snapshot of the Linux 3.9 kernel and then Mesa 9.2-devel Git master from mid-March. This represents the very latest state of the Intel Linux graphics driver. (Ubuntu 13.04 will ship with Mesa 9.1, but that stable release wasn't pulled into the repository at the time of testing and 9.2-devel offers the absolute latest innovations for this open-source driver.a)

How To Create A Windows 8 Bootable USB Disk

How To Create A Windows 8 Bootable USB Disk

A USB flash drive is a faster storage medium compared to CD or DVD. For some applications where speed matters, it’s always preferable to use a USB flash drive instead of regular optical storage media. One of these applications is of course, installing an operating system. Installing from a USB flash drive is noticeably faster than installing from optical media and it can also serve as a backup in case your CD/DVD drive fails. So here’s how to create a Windows bootable USB disk in a few simple steps!

Steps to create a Windows bootable USB disk:

Step 1: Click here and download WiNToBootic.
Step 2: Extract it where you want and run it.
Step 3: You should see a screen like the one below.
Step 4: Plug in the USB drive you want to use as the Windows bootable USB disk, make sure that it’s empty.
Step 5: Now select your source file or directory. Here you can select an ISO image or if you don’t have one, simply select the folder where all the installation files are available.
Step 6: Click “Do it!” and wait for the process to complete, it might take a while.
Once this is done, your USB flash drive should be ready to install Windows wherever you want. It’s always good to keep one USB flash drive as backup with the setup of your operating system of choice in case of any failures, since you can even run automatic or manual startup repair from it instead of installing a completely new copy of it. It’s even helpful if you want to install an operating system on ultrabooks or notebooks with no optical disk drive included. For best results, use a USB 3.0 flash drive and of course, plug it into a USB 3.0 port on your PC or laptop. So that was how to create a Windows bootable USB disk,

Samsung Galaxy S4: Apple needs to go big with the iPhone 5S, or go home

Samsung Galaxy S4: Apple needs to go big with the iPhone 5S, or go home

  • By ethicalguy gopal
Samsung Galaxy S4 Black and White

The Samsung Galaxy S4 is an omnipotent smartphone — anomniphone — that gives us our first real glimpse at a future where all our computing needare satisfied by the same device. Be it productivity, content consumption, or playing games, it’s now clear that the future of personal computing is consolidation in a single portable device; most likely a smartphone. For the hundreds of millions of people who find themselves relying on their smartphones more and more each day, this doesn’t come as much of a surprise. What is surprising, though, is that no one would’ve expected it to be Samsung that would wrap up the bedroom, living room, and office with a single device; anyone with a grain of sense would’ve pegged Apple as the ultimate consumer electronics master. Somehow, Apple has blown it.
Just a year or two ago, it seemed like Apple had it all sewn up with the iPhone and iPad. Every sensible person had money on Apple — and indeed, judging by Apple’s meteoric market valuation between 2009 and 2012, from $80 per share to a peak of $700 per share, every sensible person really did have their money on Apple. While Apple’s position as the world’s most valuable company was no doubt cemented by truly ridiculous profit margins, the main reason for Apple’s incredible valuation was the investor belief that the Cupertino company could seemingly do no wrong. Apple’s track record really was astounding, going from zero to world’s-most-profitable-hero in just a few years, first on the back of the iPhone, and then the iPad.
Galaxy S4: WatchOn TV remote controlIt has now been three years since the release of the iPad, and except for a few hardware tweaks and the introduction of Siri, nothing has really happened since. When the iPhone was the only smartphone worth taking seriously, Apple might’ve got away with slow updates and stagnant feature sets — but today, with strong competition on both the hardware and software front from Android, Apple is struggling to keep afloat, let alone ahead. The iPad is still the unquestioned king of the tablets, but for how long? The 7-inch Android tablets are gaining ground, and Samsung’s Note tablets are starting to make the iPad look very staid and featureless in comparison.
And then there’s the living room. With Apple TV, iTunes, millions of games, and AirPlay streaming, all eyes have been on the seemingly-imminent-but-fast-becoming-vaporware iTV — the large-screen centerpiece of the Apple living room experience. With an iTV, some gamepad peripherals for the iPhone and iPad, and a Sonos-like music player, Apple could’ve mopped up the entire home entertainment market, and much of the at-home consumer electronics market too.
Galaxy S4 gamepad peripheralThe iTV and peripherals never came, though — and here we are, looking at a Samsung Galaxy S4 with a built-in infrared television remote, a prediction algorithm a la Netflix, a gamepad attachment, numerous m-health (mobile health) apps and peripherals, and dozens of other features that Apple’s devices can only dream of. Samsung already makes TVs —smart TVs, no less — and a wireless dock/speaker that turns your smartphone into a sound system. I should also point out that the Galaxy S4 website mentions that the gamepad will be compatible with a 6.3-inch device — but Samsung doesn’t yet make a 6.3-inch phone/tablet. I’m speculating, but maybe Nvidia’s Android-based Project Shield portable will have some competition?
This isn’t to say that Samsung has crafted a perfectly integrated living room solution, but it’s definitely a lot closer than Apple. Once you factor in laptops, tablets, and even fridges and washing machines, Samsung is approaching the point where, for some people, almost every device they interact with will be made by Samsung. Not that it really matters in the overall Grand Unified Living Room, but let’s not forget that Samsung probably makes the SoC or memory for any other non-Samsung devices that you use, too. (See: The Galaxy S4′s full hardware and software specs.)

iPhone 5S: Go big, or go home

Apple’s response to Samsung’s growing dominance, if it has one, must come with the iPhone 5S — or not at all. Since the launch of Siri some 18 months ago, we’ve really seen very little in the way of innovation from Apple. If Apple continues with its usual release cadence and simply makes the iPhone 5S a bit faster, the company will be in trouble — and that’s exactly why the company’s stock  price has been plummeting since the release of the iPhone 5. With ever-increasing pressure from Android, and Microsoft and BlackBerry praying for some action, Apple really doesn’t have a whole lot of leeway. If the iPhone 5S (due Q3 2013) is just a minor speed bump, then that means it’ll be a full 18 months until Apple can finally respond to the Samsung threat with the iPhone 6 — by which point there’ll already be a Galaxy S5, which will raise the bar yet again.
iPhone 5 (white) on its side, hovering, levitating... mysticalIt’s a little odd seeing Apple play catch-up after being the forerunner for so long, but this is what happens when a company rests on its highly profitable laurels. Where Apple is making minor OS tweaks and implementing one or two new features every 24 months, Samsung has made enough changes that its flagship devices are now almost completely differentiated from Android. S Translator, ChatOn, Smart Pause/Scroll, Air View/Gesture, WatchOn, Adapt Display/Sound, S Health, Sound & Shot, Group Play, Dual Camera — all new in the last 12-24 months, all exciting, and almost all without parallel on iOS/iPhone. At this point, with every smartphone on the market packing a Retina display and fast SoC, I think it’s a little disingenuous to compare the hardware — but even here, in Apple’s oldest stronghold, Samsung has met or surpassed the competition.
Apple isn’t out of the race yet, of course. It would be stupid to discount a company with the largest bank balance and best supply chain in the world. As Apple knows all too well, though, you can’t put a price on inertia — and Samsung has built a hell of a lot over the last three years of Galaxy phones. While Samsung continues to build upon that inertia, Apple is merely drifting through space
